Passport General Information

The Department of Foreign Affairs started issuing electronic passports (e-passports) on 11 August 2009. Ten months later, the Philippine Embassy started issuing e-passports on 16 June 2010.

The e-passport has an embedded integrated circuit chip which contains the details of the passport, including the bearer’s biometric information, following the standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), in compliance to a deadline set for November 2015. The e-passport allows information stored on the chip to be verified with the information visually displayed on the passport. The chip is highly interoperable; meaning, it can be read by any standard border control machine worldwide. It is integrated with high security mechanisms in order to prevent any forceful scheming of data it contains, any cloning, and any remote reading.

The e-passport is highly secure; hence, it avoids passport duplication and tampering. The e-passport database is enhanced with Automated Fingerprint Verification System (AFIS) that guards against multiple passport issuances to the same person and enhances impostor detection.


  1. Personal appearance is required for all passport applicants.
  2. No need to submit passport size photos.
  3. Please wear decent attire with collar. Earrings and contact lenses are not allowed during data capturing.
  4. Check all the data in the Enrollment Certificate before signing it.
  5. Passport processing or renewal takes one month.
  6. Check all the data printed on the new e-passport upon receipt.
  7. Passports unclaimed after six (6) months will be cancelled per Department Order No. 37-03.
